Cancer can change everything overnight.
You shouldn’t also have to become an expert in navigating the healthcare system.

The Cancer Care & Advocacy Guide was created for people living with cancer, caregivers and families who want to feel more informed, prepared and confident throughout the cancer journey.

Whether you’re trying to understand a diagnosis, supporting someone through treatment, questioning the care your loved one is receiving, considering making a formal NHS complaint, or simply trying to understand what you’re entitled to ask for. This guide was created to help you find your voice.

When care doesn’t feel good enough It can be incredibly difficult to know what to do when you feel unheard, communication breaks down, concerns aren’t taken seriously, or you believe aspects of someone’s care should have been handled differently.

You may find yourself wondering:

“Am I allowed to question this?”
“Who am I supposed to speak to?”
“How do I make sure my concerns are documented?”
“What are our rights as a patient or family?”
“How do I make a formal complaint?”
“What happens if I’m unhappy with the response?”
“Where can I go next?”

This guide helps you understand the different routes available and provides practical tools to help you communicate clearly, keep records, ask better questions, escalate concerns and navigate the NHS complaints process.

Created from lived experience 🤍

A huge reason I created this guide came from my own experience caring for my mum during cancer.

At a young age, I suddenly found myself trying to understand cancer treatment while navigating appointments, communicating with professionals, raising concerns and dealing with aspects of her care that I felt were not good enough.

I know what it feels like to love somebody deeply while simultaneously feeling that you have to fight to make sure their voice is heard.

And I know how overwhelming it can be to look back and wonder:

Could I have asked something differently?
Should I have challenged that?
Who could I have spoken to?
What were our rights?

This is the kind of guide I wish someone had handed me then.
